Consider a simple living room photo: a person sitting on a sofa, legs crossed, with a coffee table partially occluded behind their knees. A standard bounding-box detector sees rectangles that collide. TapEdit’s detection model goes further — it produces pixel-accurate region maps that separate the person’s silhouette from the sofa cushions beneath them, the table legs behind them, and the rug underneath. When you tap the sofa, only the sofa is selected. When you tap the person’s shirt, the model isolates just the garment, distinct from the arm in front of it and the backrest behind it.

This level of precision demands more than off-the-shelf segmentation. Overlapping objects create ambiguous depth layers that a flat 2D image does not explicitly encode. TapEdit’s enhanced detection model infers occlusion order, estimates which object is in front, and resolves boundaries at the pixel level — even along soft edges like hair against a textured background, or translucent fabric over skin.

Context-Aware Edits

Detection is only half the equation. Once TapEdit knows what you tapped, a second AI model determines what to do with it.

This suggestion model analyzes the tapped object in the context of everything around it — the person’s pose, their outfit, the lighting, the background, even the overall mood of the image. Tap a shirt, and the model doesn’t just offer random alternatives: it suggests styles that complement the rest of the outfit, fabrics that match the scene’s formality, and colors that harmonize with the surroundings. Tap a hairstyle, and it proposes cuts and textures that suit the person’s face shape, work with their accessories — glasses, earrings, a hat — and feel consistent with the image’s aesthetic.

This is compositional intelligence: the ability to reason about relationships between objects, not just identify them in isolation. A leather jacket suggestion knows whether the person is at a beach or a city street. A furniture replacement knows the room’s palette and period. Every suggestion is grounded in the spatial, stylistic, and semantic context of the full image.
